Hi Guys, I was wondering if someone could give me some advise.I am about to start a side extension to my house, and need to dig out the footings.The extension sizes are approx 8.5m x 2.5m, and based on other extensions in the area, depth should be ok for 1000mm x 600mm wide, the usual really.Anyway, I have 2 options. I work for a company who use one of the local Hire companies, and through my contacts, I am able to hire a 1.5tonne mini digger for a week, for £200 inc delivery and collection, pretty good deal I must say. One problem though, I have never driven a digger in my life.My other option of course is to hire a digger and driver.

I have found a company who will do this for £200 + vat for a day, not too bad a price either, I thought.Anyway, I know hiring the digger is cheaper, but my question is, if I hired the digger and driver, would he be able to get my footings dug and reduce the centre down by 300mm, ready for the slab, in 1 day, weather permitting of course, or I am just worrying too much about doing it myself, and just hire the digger.Cheers chapsSteve. I,ve just had my garage slab removed. It was approx150 thk and measured 6m x 6m. The machine was a 3.5ton mini. I also had a picker on site however thiswas not used for breaking out the slab.

The slab wassimply lifted and dropped until it was in manageablepieces. The pecker was used for breaking out rockelsewhere.My slab did not have any mesh. Mesh would be a pain iwould imagine.did you do this yourself, or get a man in? If so, how much did you have to pay to have this dug up and removed?after a full day on my 1.5t hired digger, two comments:1: I should have hired a 3.5t as the 1.5t just couldn't lift some bits of the garage slab without me first breaking it in to smaller pieces2: they are really easy to drive, at least the 'libra' one I hired is. After about an hour the movements become natural and you don't need to think about how to move it.
